Updating our Airport Master Plan

An Airport Master Plan is a comprehensive study of an airport that describes the short, medium and long-term sustainable alternatives and plans. Master plans are required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in order to establish the regulatory framework for our future development of  actions air-side and land-side.

It’s been 12 years since our current plan was adopted, and it’s time for an update, now that projects in that plan have largely been completed. The Master Plan update will identify possible new projects that would help to ensure the airport’s long-term viability, enhance facility safety, and further our goals for economic prosperity, environment stewardship, and community partnership.

The Master Plan update will also ensure that the airport can continue receiving federal funding for operations. King County International Airport/Boeing Field must have a current master plan to be eligible for project grant funding from the FAA. From 2000-2014, approximately 92 percent of grant-eligible projects and 65 percent of all capital improvements at the Airport were through FAA grants.

Our process will center around a series of five working papers, on such subjects as Inventory and Forecasts, Capacity Analysis and Facility Requirements, Alternatives, Environmental Documentation, and a Financial Improvement Plan. We anticipate delivering a proposed Master Plan Update to the King County Council in late 2017, and upon adoption it will inform the Airport’s proposed 2019-2020 biennial budget.

Stakeholder input is an important part of the planning process and we are convening an Airport Master Plan Update Advisory Group that meet an estimated five times over the next 18 months. The project will provide additional opportunities for airport users and neighbors to review project information and provide input, including at open house meetings and through the project website.
